Advantages of shooting RAW

Improved exposure latitude
Shooting RAW will typically give you a 1 F-Stop advantage. This means highlights are less likely to burn out.

Highlight Recovery.
Raw processing software will allow you to adjust your exposure AFTER you've taken the photos, allowing you to recover burned out highlights which would otherwise be permanently lost if you were shooting JPEG. Some RAW programs allow one to adjust exposure by up to 2 F-stops (dependant on camera & settings too).

Lossless Shooting
JPEG is a format which WILL lose information as it automatically compresses the images - even on the highest quality settings. Every time you open, adjust and save a JPEG image, information is lost as it compresses the file.

Shooting RAW allows you to have the "negative" that came off the camera sensor. In fact, ADOBE's "universal" raw format, the ".DNG" file, is said to stand for "Digital Negative"

Raw software allows you to make all the adjustments you like, and then finally save your image once - with no loss of quality.

Future proofing images
As software technology advances you will be able to recover details in RAW images which aren't recoverable today. Benefits in noise reduction are likely to make previously unusable images feasible again. Shooting JPEG reduces the possibilities of benefiting from future software.

Disadvantages of shooting RAW

RAW does have a few downsides:

- larger file sizes mean more storage space and computing power needed for the images

- the time taken for post processing raw images.

- Most photo labs cant print from RAW files.

True Imaging's post processing service includes:

- Pre-editing (optional): removing duplicates and unwanted images (i.e. out of focus, severely under/ over exposed, unflattering images etc).

- RAW processing if applicable

- Colour & white balance correction

- Exposure / light adjustment

- Ensuring consistency of colour & light across all images in a batch.
